Crafting Immersive Visuals for RB Leipzig’s Stadium Experience

Overview of the Project

When the Grizzle team and I were tasked with enhancing RB Leipzig’s stadium experience, the mission was clear: create dynamic, engaging visuals for their LED boards. These visuals would amplify the excitement for fans, showcase team pride, and provide seamless integration of player names, slogans, and goal celebrations.

Collaborating with a skilled group of designers, I had the privilege of contributing to a project that merged creativity with technical precision.

Role of LED Boards in Stadium Experiences

LED boards are a key component of modern sports entertainment. They serve not only as a platform for dynamic visuals but also as a bridge connecting fans to the team. For RB Leipzig, these boards were a way to elevate the live match atmosphere, ensuring fans felt immersed in every moment.

From player walkouts to goal celebrations, the visuals had to be vivid, responsive, and on-brand.

My Role in the RB Leipzig Project

As a motion graphics freelancer, my responsibilities included designing animations for various LED boards across the stadium. Key tasks included:

  • Animating player introductions.

  • Creating text-based animations with RB Leipzig-themed backgrounds.

  • Designing goal celebration effects that resonated with the team’s identity.

  • Keying out green screens for player walkout videos.

Each task required creativity, attention to detail, and a deep understanding of the client’s branding.

Software Used: Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D

Adobe After Effects and Cinema 4D were at the heart of this project. Their robust capabilities made them the perfect tools for creating dynamic animations and handling the technical aspects of green screen keying. We built a 3D stage in Cinema 4D and matched the lighting timing to that of the green screen footage from the studio. Exporting the 3D environment as an image sequence and taking it into After Effects allowed us to composite the two elements together, keying the green screen out and adding 2D smoke effects.

Key features used included:

  • Motion Graphics Templates: Streamlining repetitive text animations.

  • Keylight Plugin: Simplifying the green screen keying process for walkout videos.

  • Precompositions: Organising complex animations for different LED board shapes.

Green Screen Keying for Player Walkout Introductions

For the player walkout introductions, footage was shot against a green screen. My role involved keying out the green background to isolate players and integrate them seamlessly into stadium visuals. Challenges included:

  • Uneven lighting on the green screen.

  • Maintaining high-quality results for large LED displays.

By using advanced keying techniques in After Effects, we ensured a crisp, professional output.

Designing Text-Based Animations for the Pitch LED Boards

RB Leipzig’s pitch-side LED boards featured text-based animations paired with team-themed graphic backgrounds. Adhering to the club’s branding guidelines, I focused on:

  • Bold, legible typography for real-time readability.

  • Smooth, dynamic transitions that captured attention.

  • Incorporating RB Leipzig’s signature red and white colour palette.

Creating Celebration Effects for Goals

One of the most rewarding parts of the project was designing visuals for goal celebrations. These animations needed to be:

  • Eye-catching and celebratory.

  • Synchronised with real-time match events.

  • Reflective of RB Leipzig’s identity, incorporating slogans like "Die Roten Bullen."

Challenges in Stadium LED Graphics Design

Designing for LED boards is a unique challenge, given the variety of screen shapes and resolutions. Ensuring seamless playback and synchronisation across multiple screens was a complex but rewarding task.

Collaboration with the Team

This project reinforced the importance of teamwork. Frequent communication and feedback sessions were vital in aligning creative visions and meeting tight deadlines.

Lessons Learned from the RB Leipzig Project

This experience taught me:

  • The importance of adaptability in motion graphics.

  • How to balance creativity with technical precision.

  • The value of effective collaboration in delivering large-scale projects.

Fan Reactions and Feedback

The final visuals received positive feedback from fans and stakeholders alike. Seeing my work enhance the live match experience for thousands of fans was incredibly fulfilling.

Importance of Branding in Sports Visuals

Consistent branding strengthens team identity. Every animation reflected RB Leipzig’s values, ensuring a cohesive visual narrative throughout the stadium.

Future of Stadium Motion Graphics

The evolution of LED technology and AI will redefine how stadium visuals are created and delivered. As a freelancer, staying updated on these trends is essential.
