RB Leipzig Stadium LED Boards

Here’s how I made the stadium boards for the high-reaching RB Leipzig team. Looking for a freelance animator and motion designer? Drop me a message today!
One of the best teams in the Bundesliga? Ya’ know it! RB Leipzig, love them or not, are an incredible team with an impactful play style. Of course, the players deserve a royal introduction before every match, and that’s exactly what Red Bull’s creative team, Team Rottensteiner, asked us to make.
About the Project
These days, a lot of the football stadiums across the world have LED Boards (or LED Bande for Leipzig) that are used for advertising both external brands and the club itself. For this season, RB Leipzig needed a few variations of videos that were in keeping with their new digital branding. These new videos would allow them to introduce players at the start of each home match, rile the fans up with some spurring slogans, and advertise their merchandise store.
Safe to say the fans are loving the new stadium boards; we’ve had word from Team Rottensteiner that they like to chant Sabitzer when his name comes up on the boards. I mean, he is a beast. Below is a video from the RB Leipzig Instagram (@dierotenbullen) that, in some clips, shows the animated board in action.

About the Idea
For this project, we went through a few different ideas with Team Rottensteiner before deciding on the style you can see above. Originally, we had their 3D render of the RB Leipzig Bull in the background, and a different font style, but the style picked out at the end is the most in keeping with the branding, and keeps it simple with 2D assets.
A subtly moving background ties the whole thing together. Using flat assets to create depth can be difficult and sometimes it just doesn’t work, but in this case, having the moving background, along with the glitch effect text elements and logo, allowed us to layer up the video and make each element stand apart from the rest.
